Many authors visit schools, libraries and other public venues. Author visits are a fantastic motivation for children, teachers and parents. Children get to meet their literary heros and get stuck in to some brilliant creative activities.
But, for me, the most valuable thing about school visits, is that children learn that authors are real people. We all started life as babies, we went to school, got in trouble with our teachers (or not!). We all had crushes and spots and made mistakes.
Author visits say to children: "If I am just like you, you could be just like me, if you want to be."
I think this is a very powerful and enabling message to give children.
